Gareth entered the Australian Defence Force Academy in 1997 where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts with First Class Honours, subsequently graduating from the Royal Military College Duntroon in 2000 to the Royal Australian Infantry Corps. He then successfully completed Special Forces selection in 2005, serving with the 2nd Commando Regiment across command, instructional and capability development roles, with operational service in Afghanistan, East Timor and the South Pacific, and fulfilling a Jungle Warfare Instructor appointment to Belize and Panama with the British Army. In 2015 Gareth transitioned to the Army Reserves to take up a position as Vice President and Board member at SimCentric Technologies where he has worked for the past eight years. In addition to managing the Australian office of SimCentric, Gareth has developed and implemented the SAF-FORESIGHT software application from inception, enabling digitisation of live fire range management and safety, with a core focus of reduction of fratricide risk to personnel in military training.

Gareth also holds a Masters in Capability Technology Management with High Distinction including 2011 course Student of Merit, and a Masters of Business Program Management with Distinction.
